Eyelid surgery procedure

BEFORE OPERATION

Your surgeon will examine you and perform the appropriate medical examinations including a vision examination.

Your eyes will be photographed from different angles. These photos help with planning the surgery and assessing its immediate and long-term effects.

It’s important to discuss your expectations for the operation with your doctor.

You should quit smoking several weeks before your surgery.

DURING OPERATION

A blepharoplasty can be done under a local anesthetic.

Surgery on the upper eyelids generally takes about 1 hour, and involves making an incision along the eyelid crease in the natural skin fold of the eyelid, removing excess skin, fat or muscle, and then closing the incision. The scar will usually be hidden in the natural fold of the eyelid.

Surgery on the lower eyelids generally takes up to 2 hours, involves making an incision either just below the lower eyelashes or on the inside of the lower eyelid, repositioning or removing fat from the bags under the eyes, and sometimes also a small amount of skin, and supporting the muscles and tendon of the eyelid if necessary, then closing the incision.

The surgeon will usually apply thin, sticky strips called suture strips to support the eyelids after surgery. These are usually removed up to 1 week later.

AFTER OPERATION

Most patients can go home the same day.

It takes about a week to recover from the operation.

Bruises, scars, and redness take several weeks to fade, so it is recommended to put a cold bag on your eyes.

Eyelids should be gently wiped with eye drops or ointment prescribed by the doctor in advance.

Avoid smoking, swimming, and strenuous activity.
